Bank of America Chicago Marathon 2011

This has been an awesome experience. Reaching the 20 mile marker was a hard wall but crossing the finish line was my greatest achievement. “Will doing it again”.

Pilates is an Awesome Experience

I was told by my Doctor that if running was my love,  I would have to incorporate Pilates to my life style to keep running.   Here is what i have learned, and of course what hurts now.

What’s the difference between mat Pilates and reformer Pilates?
I have learned that Pilates mat workouts and Pilates reformer workouts provide similar benefits, it’s no wonder that newbies like me are often confused about which form is right for their current goals and abilities. Here’s a breakdown of the two types of classes to help you..
Working against resistance is essential to the Pilates exercises, which are designed to train the body’s “powerhouse” —  this is the part i need to keep strong to continue to be a runner : the abdomen, lower back, hips and buttocks. But you can accomplish that in Pilates using either a mat, where your own body weight creates resistance, or a reformer, where pulleys and springs create resistance.

How Pilates on a mat works
Pilates mat work is often done group classes, which are much easier to find than reformer sessions.  I have been a memeber in my health club for over 6 years and i restly learned they offered two types of classes, And even gyms without full Pilates studios often offer mat classes, usually at no additional fee for members.
Many Pilates experts recommend mat classes as the best bet for us beginners. Average students typically add reformer work after three months of once-a-week mat classes.   Teachers insists that new clients acquire a foundation on the mat before launching into apparatus work. “The body can get very confused with controlling the effect of an external challenge source and learn to rely on big global muscles or small over-tasked ones to practice a reformer exercise and miss the target.

While doing Pilates on a mat instead of a reformer may not seem as fun or challenging, many  see results — improved strength, posture, agility and flexibility, as well as toned muscles —  After two month of once-a-week Pilates mat sessions, I desided to try the reform classes.

How Pilates on a reformer works
To some, reformer equipment might resemble a torture apparatus, this was my first impression as i walked into the room.  it looking like a single bed frame , but with a sliding carriage and adjustable springs that was explain was for  regulate tension and resistance. Cables, bars, straps and pulleys allow exercises to be done from a variety of positions, even standing.
The resistance created by the pulley and spring system can provide a more challenging strength and endurance workout than mat classes. It may also produce visible results sooner — arm, leg and abdominal muscles can look more firm and defined within a dozen or so regular sessions.

The attachments increase the range of modifications that I could do in an exercise, and allow  me additional exercises beyond what can be done on a mat.   I felt i did very little but the next day I could feel the work out and muscles i had used the day before.   WOW !

I have pain in muscles i did not know i had but I must tell you its the best work out I have ever had.  I am 45 years old and workout and keep heathly has been a great experience.  Us woman need health hearts and strong bones.  Pilates and Running will keep me healthly, strong and living a comfortable life for many years.  Next to my first love running,  pilates is second place.

see you in the next class.

Thanks to Physcial Therapy

A few months after my marathon I was doing a run and I was almost mugged.  As funny as that sounds it was actually a very scary experience.  I was not hurt by the crazy psycho guy, but I did hurt myself running away.   I understand now, that my body was messing up little by little during these last few years of running after I had my back surgery.   But that run and the mugger was the icing on the cake.   That day did not end well. I limped back to my car with pain in my right leg.   Since the pain was so uncomfortable, I took a few weeks off and then attempted to begin running again. But, after about an eighth of a mile the pain was unbearable, even walking or going up stairs was hard and uncomfortable.   So, after an emergency room hospital visit it was determined that I had a stress fracture in my foot.   No more running per doctors’ orders! And he was dead serious.  The worst part was using crutches; it pulled my back out and created a titled pelvis.   Holy Cow was I broken.

After months with the Chiropractor, I was finally approved to do physical therapy.   As most of you know I have been doing the physical therapy to correct my hip, pelvis and lower back.   Thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to meet a very good Physical Therapist.  His name is Howie Manuel, he’s from Hawaii.  I love Hawaii, and his parents are Philippino.  Howie is a very friendly and informative person and a runner too! Oh yea!  He understands patients like me, as he says I still have that runner mentality, meaning he gives me an inch and I want to run 3 miles.   Not a good thing.  Anyway he has been great with therapy, and showing me the correct exercises and adjustments, plus, of course he’s heavy handy.  I have been able to keep my spine straight and aligned, and so, I feel normal again.  It’s weird how humans work; when in pain we adapt and keep going causing our bodies to get worse.   The problem is, however, as a younger person you can just snap back from an injury, BUT, as an older person you eventually break down.

After Howie was able to get me pain free, he started to correct my running technique, teaching me how to run differently so I would not keep hurting my back and everything else on my body.  He introduced me to the Metronome.  If you would like to understand how this works please read my previous article " TIC TIC TOC".   Today Howie gave me a test.  I needed to run 2 miles and at a certain pace.   I was right on target and you could not hear my feet banging on the treadmill.    At one point he turned the Metronome off and I stayed on beat for a few more minutes before I lost my rhythm.    Once he turned it back on I was on beat again.   This means my training to the beat of the metronome is working!   He says this is normal for two weeks of training.   The great thing is I feel no pain and I will be able to run this year’s Chicago Marathon again.

I am so happy and thankful to Howie for all his help and patience.   I will continue my therapy and my running.  When I cross this year’s finish line I will be thinking and thanking Howie!

SafSlim Reviewed: Does SafSlim Work?

SafSlim was featured on Dr. Oz show- as a national weight loss suppliment.

SafSlim is advertised as a one-of-a-kind weight reducing product that promises to reduce belly fat in only a short amount of time. This delicious, liquid-form supplement is enriched with high-linoleic safflower oil, a highly regarded ingredient known for its fat-burning properties.
Touting it as "Montel Williams' favorite belly fat-blasting supplement," Tuesday's episode of The Dr. Oz Show will discuss SafSlim.

What is SafSlim? It is high-linoleic safflower oil, flavored and emulsified into a creamy consistency. You use it twice a day before a meal. You either slurp it by the tablespoon or stir it into yogurt or blend it in a smoothie.
SafSlim comes in berry and tangerine flavors and is sweetened with xylitol. Each tablespoon is 60 calories.

Studies were done at Ohio State University on 50 overweight, diabetic post-menopausal women. The women who supplemented their diet with high-linoleic safflower oil lost up to 9 percent of their belly fat in 16 weeks without changing their diet or workouts. They also had an average of a 20 percent increase in a hormone that helps with insulin sensitivity and metabolism.

I puchased the suppliment and will be testing and review the product.  Please follow me as I burn off the pounds.

"Seriously - WHY"

Today's subject will be Seriously - Why.

As the years have gone by I have noticed what I believe to be the norm, just isnt and so I have decided to express the " Please dont do's at the Gym"

Today I was running on the threadmill at the Gymn In deep concentration I might add,  since I must keep the beat of the metronome.   This process or type of running was explained in my last joural entry " Just getting comfortable with the TIC TIC TOC." When I look in front of me, I had a tiny boppor on the stairmaster.  With oversize jogging pants that clearly are not made for her, so they sit very low " I mean very low" and her pink lace thong underwear is sticking  way out.  This just dont even look comfortable.    "SERIOUSLY WHY"!

After my run I move on to the eliptical, since it is less harsh on the body and you are not hitting the floor like when you are running.   After about 10 minutes a lady about late twenties decides to run in front of me. Let me describe what her outfit consisted off, a shirt that fits my 3 year old grand child Aidan, which read: "I love Beer" and a pair of leopard skin shorts that look like under wear.  The shorts were so tight you had a massive wedgie.  Both her but cheeks were hanging out.  "SERIOUSLY WHY"!

First of all you have to work out in something comfortable,  but I have to ask why dress this way.  Do you not have money to buy something to wear or could it be that you think this is the perfect place to get picked up at.   This is not the meat market lets keep that crap on "Rush Street".

Now lets talk about the locker room!

When you walk into our locker rooms there is a lounge with a 50" in TV and some leather sofas.  For GOD SAKE!  I walk in and a 300 pound person is sitting there butt naked, on leather seats with no towel! "SERIOUSLY WHY"!

I go to the locker and get my tower, and walk to the Steam Room.  As I walk in there a few people sitting there naked, and the nakedness is not the bad part,  your sitting on the bench with no towel under you.  YUK " SERIOUSLY WHY"

I finally find a comfortable spot place my towel and lay down.  In come in the two old parakeets talking in a foreign language.  They were chit chattering for about 15 minutes and were asked a few time to stop talking.  " SERIOUSLY WHY"

And,  last but the not the least disgusting, their was a lady doing her hair perm in the locker room, sitting right next to my locker.   Why in hell would you do your hair at the gym, that is what the crap a hair salon is for!

I hope I have not offended anyone but seriously the gym is for working out and inproving health.

Just getting comfortable with the TIC TIC TOC

I started my physical therapy a few months back after an injury and  finally have reached the point where I am able to do some minor running.   As, most runner's know, running outside can cause a strenuous effect on the body. It's almost like running against a concrete floor because you feel the next day like your muscles were run over by a car that you  never saw coming your way.  Most of my training I am doing on a threadmill  as this is my only option, for now. So a quick desicion was make to workout at the gym instead of running outdoors.

My first run was actually very smooth with no pain, which is always a plus. The training that I am currently required to do is to run to the beat of a Metronome. My Buddie Kristin S. explaines it much better;  My trainer is trying to train me from overstriding (common cause of injuries) and help me to run underneath my center of gravity. When I overstride and land heal first, it's like coming to a hard stop; every stride is very jarring on my body.  Well, needless to say after 5 minutes of the tic tic tac I was thinking like the bull; first person dress in red is out of here. Believe it or not, it does help after a while. I could hear the tic tic toc sound more like foot, foot, foot toc; foot, foot, foot, toc. I found myself repeating the metronome beat under my breath alloowing me to be on beat. I have tried a few other suggestions made by some of my DM Run Budies [www.dailymile.com ], and found this is a great website to created Freindships and meet runners that want to run or work out with you. You will find dozens of runner's that are running for the same Events or Organization that you might be running for . The best part is that everyone shares advice and gives tips and suggestions based on experience, trial and error.

If you want to add me on Dailymile :

My cousin Yvonne, as well as one of my DM Buddies, explains why this type of training is used.
Yvonne H.: Jeff Galloway says the same thing as Kristin S.  said. I find that when my stride is longer, I strike much harder on my heel. When I shorten it, I can run faster and more comfortable.

Jennifer E. suggested in Jog.fm. it will allow for cadence/bpm of music. If you even run with musicBudies see Jene were the Jog.fm app.   You can use the Jog.Fm on your IPhone  [ http://jog.fm].  There are great songs and lots of play list from previous runners.   While searching I found my son's favoite song : Marron 5 Moves like Jagger which is best for a 12 mile run using a 128 BPM.  What does BPM mean?  Beats Per Minute, which is how the speed or tempo is measured in musical terms in Group Fitness.

Running Apps or Fitness Apps you will find plenty..........5K....10K...for speed.....for recordkeeping and plenty more.

If you have any suggestions that could help me or what to just share an idea please let me know.  Well headed to the gym for my 2 mile tic toc run.

 Love you guys

Making Changes 2012

Hey Guys,

This years I have decided to make a few changes.  I do believe I have always places my best foot forward in everything that I do.   But there comes a time, or should I say an age that you need to focus a little bit more narrow.

With careful though I am taking my company a step back and giving it a different image.  There are a lot of Telecommunication companies out there and due to the economy every fortune 500 company is now offering the same services as the smaller Ma & Pop shops as we call them.   I will still be in the same industry but I will engineer, design and consult and let someone else do the work ( Install).

Just got finish deploying the Town of Cicero and its looks "Awesome".   Take a look at our Camera POD.

I am creating a new company image,  If you have seen my current site its all about "Wireless"  take a look www.Fiberinthesky.com.  The Company is still doing "Wireless" but with 12 years of experience we will focus more on the Engineering, Design and Consulting.  I am almost done with the new Image and website, once its complete you will be the first to see it.

changing my blog, to better things

Hey its been a while, since my last entry. I havent been running for a few months. I got a stress fractue from running and was cut off from running. I am now going through physical therapy and hopefully i should be able to run soon.

When i started my blog, I started writing about my running and experience. I recently decided that I would rather write about the reason I run , my life. I feel that running helps me handle life in general. But maybe writing about life as well we help me to move forward to better things. I will be adding stories and ask for help and maybe I can even help you with something. one of my subject will soon be. i'm 45 this month!

Hard Miles

Hey guys,  I am stilling running :) currently, at the hardest part of the training.  Every run moving forward will consitst of a Half a Marathon. Today's goal was a 14 Miles run. Had lots of Facebook family cheering me on.  " Thanks Guys"!  The run was great, the Chicago humidity Suxs!  Got a serious calf cramp at 13.4 Miles into my goal. well almost reached the goal.  I made a sudden rush for the cold water of Lake Michigan  it was needed! But i did make it past my Frist Half Marathon! OH YEA!

Ice water after a long run is perfect. It takes away the inflammation and relaxes the muscles. You do not seem to wake up as sore. Chicago Lake Michigan water if everyone can remember is a tub of ice. After every run I walk into the lake deep enough to reach my waist (which is not much since I am short) and standing/squat/ walk a bit for at least 20/30 minutes.  The water is ice cold it’s so cold it burns a bit but after 10 minutes it starts to feels warm.   I start to go deeper to reach colder water.  Try it after a run its great. Ok guys until the next run.

Tortoise and the Hare

Today was a great run.  I started a new training program that will enable me to complete the Chicago Marathon in 5 1/2 hours.   I am training to run 12 minute miles.  Today I was scheduled to run a little faster than normal,  some days are faster then others.    As, I was running I could hear foot step catching up to me from behind,  My Hubby's was passing me up.

I continued to run and started to sing to the music on my iPhone. "Quiero estar contigo mi "Morenito",  [I want to be with you my little brownie].  My husband slows down to join me in my run and at my pace.   He had this BIG cheesy Smile on his face.   By the way my husband has dark complexion so Morenito would be his color.  Morenito Men are just "HOT"!   As I am singing my song, my hubby is running by my side, but the moment I stop singing that song.  He took off like a FIRE CRACKER!

" I see how it is" I yelled as he took off.

I keep telling my hubby I will continue to run at my pace,  because I am going to pass him up at the 16 miles.  While the paramedic is pulling out the cardiac paddles for his butt.  Dont worry,  I will make it up to you. On your headstone it will read “Crockpot Paella wins Boiler Beaner" here she has placed her Metal.  Aww You know I am just kidding Mi Amor, You know Que Te Amo, [love you].

But love has nothing to do with it! LOL

Oreo Cookies

I have never been a bad eater, as most of my family says “You will not find crap food in Monika's house".   My kids love to visit their aunts and uncles on the weekend.  Guess why! they have Oreo cookies and Candy, chips and crap!

During one of our family gatherings, Isaac was looking for chips or cookies in the kitchen cabinets.  My daughter Cindy says to Isaac “you will not find that in this kitchen”.  Number 1 Rule: you bring that crap with you.

He found what he believes to be a container of Brownies from Whole Foods!   This is the store i do most of my shopping.   The container says dairy free, wheat free, gluten free; he paid no attention to the label since he could see they were brownie...    He took one bit out of the brownie and said “what the hell is this, it taste like crap”.     Cindy replied “that’s what my mom calls sweeties”.

It’s funny but every one that visits brings soda, and SWEETIE! (Cake, cookies, chips, etc....).

The reason i am telling the story is because I recently weighed myself and found I had gained weight! How, it beats me.   As, of today very serious training, more fresh food and water. NO COFFEE.

I am a morning person, and working out at 5 or 6 am was never a problem.   I feel like the energizer bunny, after a workout.

I haven’t been myself lately,  I think I might need vitamin.  Check out how I'm feeling!

Alright, I have a 10 days trip to Hawaii in September and I plan on wearing a small bikini.  Wooo Hoooo.... OK!  “So lets get our shit together”   NEED SOME HELP HERE !

GOT TO KEEP RUNNING!  My Motivation:  Hawaii, hot beaches, waves, pineapple with liquor.
Open to suggestions J

Freaking Out

Call it old age, or call me a whip.   I have been thinking out this year’s marathon more than I should.   I have never been concerned with speed, my thoughts are as long as I complete the marathon I am good.   And I have to admit last years marathon was hard but I did complete it, that was my only goal.
Just in case you’re laughing, I didn’t see you at the finish line! J
As a new marathon runner its hard to know what is good and what isn’t.    Like every sport everyone has advice and there are always books, books and more books.     I am trying to keep my sanity as I train and try not to overdo it.  I have always been a health nut, of course the regular 5 or 6 miles run on the theadmill but I never did imaged I would become a marathon enthusiast.
I enjoy the run, the time alone to think thing out.  The control I have over myself and the feeling of my accomplishments when I am done.
I was running 5 miles run yesterday and I was supposed to run 2.5 miles, and when I reached the mile marker I was suppose to turn around.   I started my run by listening to a sermon on how we should be the best at everything...   Geezzz am I obsessed with perfection. “no”.  I just like to hear positive words as I run.  For some reason I started to remember high school and all the things I had planned to do with life.  Like I was reviewing my plan.
Then I jumped to the birth of my daughter Monica.  I was remembering that I took some pictures of her at Humboldt Park surrounded by dandelions, which of course I now know are weeds!   I love that picture.   I know you are saying “get to the point”, well my point was I got so deep into the thoughts that I blocked out the run.   I had passed the 2.5 miles marker and I noticed that my breathing was in tune.  My legs didn’t feel heavy and I was running in sync.   That is my point as an amateur runner, I don’t need to over think my run or focus on the need to be a 10 minute mile runner.  That will come with time and experience.   The reason for my runs has always been health, entertainment, and to reduce migraines from stress.
Stress, because when I run, I solve problems, I organize my day.   I remember what I have forgotten to do.   I clear my head and have a clear perspective of a lot.
What I like the most from my running now is that it has united my family.  My kids have gain interest in running;   we planned a few 5K’s together.   I give them credit; I know they love me if they are running in cold weather with me during the Santa hustle last year.   Its sweet to see them matching my soxs or running next to me.  I guess health is not the only reason to run now.
I guess this is what I need to remember instead of worrying about the marathon.
I will admit I have become a bit selfish, I was searching for long distance runs last night and my husband as me why.    Well I answered I have quite a few long distance runs, if I am going to run a 14,16,18,20 miles during my training, it would be nice to get a metal for them.
Thanks for hearing me out!   Join me in a run J

Lost My Groove!

Sorry Troops, I haven’t had the opportunity to write, I seem a bit off lately.   What is up with the cold weather and all the rain?  This time last year I was full force in training and kicking butt.   I am running but I can’t seem to find my grove?   I do not know at what given point, or what race I lost it at!  BUT I NEED IT BACK!

Running, especially over long distances, requires a great deal of recovery.  After a few runs, I could not walk off a small curb, for four days without my legs buckling due to weak muscles.   This last run I was waiting patiently behind a head bopping, music dancing, energy for the next year teen runner!,  This was very humbling,  Hello! I hear the inner voice say, OMG, are you old! Get it together.  I know I have a lot of training to do But, I just can’t get into the rhythm.   This experience made me ask myself, why does running require so much recovery? Does recovery just take time? How can I recover quicker and easier from racing and running?  I need to slow down and get there when I get there!   Anybody hear me out there?

So who ever finds my Groove please return it!  I miss it L

New Running Shoes

Last year about two month before my marathon I decided to purchase a new pair of running shoes. I was wearing my second pair of Brooks and they were looking a little old. Now, bear with me because I know what you’re thinking, the older the gym shoe the better they feel. I had heard about the Running Store by one of my siblings, and once I got to the store the sale Rep asked me questions like; how long do you run, what type of running you do, what are your future plans and if you feel any aches or pains after your runs.

Ok, now after the 21 questions they make you take your shoes off. You stand on this pad and that indicates how you proportion your weight on your heals when you stand. It was also explained that this helps decide the best type of shoes to run in. Then I got a 3 minute run on a treadmill while my feel and heals were being recorded. The concept is used to determine how you land on your feet and to see how straight your heal is, as it is aligned with your ankles. Please do not take all that I am saying as 100% straight from the horse’s mouth, I am trying to repeat what the guy was telling me as he did the test. Then, they will let you preview the recording and show you how your feet landed. For some reason I tend to point my foot a bit out when I land during my run. They suggested two styles of shoes for me that gives me extra stability. Then they heat some insoles and they fit them to your feet. This will give your feet better arch support with your gym shoes. The reason of this long explanation will be given soon.

They recommend both Brooks and Asics IGS. I enjoy running in Brooks, the shoes have no weight and they feel roomy. When I say roomy, I have a penthouse of wiggle room for the piggies. Since I already had a pair of Brooks I purchased the Asics IGS. They felt snug but comfortable. I decided to wear them and walk in them for a while to break them in and get used to the style and comfort before the marathon.

Frist let me say I am a self-conscience person. If I am not 100% comfortable in what I am wearing I feel the other 7 billion people in the world will notice. These gym shoes have a funny look to them. The laces start at the far right and as they work themselves up to the top they all finish at the left side of the shoe. This makes it seem as if my feet point at each other. Now do not get me wrong, they are comfortable but again I felt a bit pigeon toed. So I didn’t wear these for the marathon. I pulled the insoles out of the new shoes, and inserted them into my old pair of Brooks, and this helped me run those 26 long, agonizing, arduous, sweat-induced miles. This brings me back to the beginning. It is definitely more comfortable to run in your warn shoes. I have just started training in my new Asics IGS, which I purchase last year. They seem heavy when I run, and  needless to say by the end of the run I felt soreness due to the weight of the shoe. The good thing is I have all summer to run in my pigeon shoes and break them in for the  next 26 mile run, this October.

Note: You must give your marathon shoes some millage before the long run.

Chicago Marathon 2011

I ran the Chicago Marathon last year for the first time. A group of friends from our church do this every year. The Team is call Run 121, They run and raise funds for World Vision Children. I have to say the experience was a painful one. Running 26 miles is not easy and the training was difficult.  By the 20th miles i was promising my kids i would not do it again. As my daughter Moni would say" sure that’s what you say now. But next year we will be here again cheering you.

I cannot say i did great timing, or that I came in looking, like all the athlete. My only goal was to finish and it seem to take for forever. There were moments where, I wanted to sit down on the side walk and say "ok, I did my best".

I believe what you start, you must finish. I set my goal to complete the marathon, to Finish.  Even if I was the last one to cross the finish line.  The experience of crossing the finish line was very emotional, I didn’t know if I should cry, laugh or lay down. :)

God has blessed me with some awesome kids, they played a major role in this; cheering for us, giving us encouragement, they joined me at one point to run alongside me. God help each and every one of us all the way and kept us safe.

Well, my friend Dave send out emails to the running team and said have you decided to run a race for Team World Vision yet? Have you built up enough courage to go for it???

Yes, I am nuts and we're doing this again! My Family will be running the Rock N Roll Chicago Half Marathon August 14 with me. And, In October my husband and I will run the Chicago Marathon for the second time.

I have started a new trend in our family. Moni, Cris and Efrain and I ran the Santa Hustle last year (Dec 4, 2010). It was cold!

In January Cris, Efrain and I ran the New Year's Dash in 22 degrees weather. Its given our family yet another great opportunity to have fun and create some lasting memories.

We will be starting our official training April 2, 2011, join me in my journey of running by reading my journal.
